The Nutley high school varsity wrestling team, under head coach Frank DiPiano, brought three Essex County Tournament medals back to Nutley on their ride from Codey Arena in West Orange this past Saturday.
Robert Duxbury (106 pounds) and Joe Ferinde (120) both won Essex County Titles and Stephen Scuttaro took second place in the 145-pound bracket. Videos of Nutley’s Championship-winning matches are able to be seen, in full, online at northjersey.com/Nutley.
After a bye in the first round as the number one seed in the 106-pound bracket, Duxbury’s first match came in the quarterfinals against West Essex’s Marco Macrino. Duxbury defeated Macrino by fall in 2:30.
In the semis, Duxbury built up a 4-0 lead going into the third period against Seton Hall Prep’s Nicholas Fierro. He went on to beat Fierro in a 6-0 decision.
Duxbury met unseeded Kyle Maw from Caldwell in the final and went on to capture the 106-pound crown with a win, by fall (1:23).
Ferinde, also the number one seed in the 120-pound bracket, earned a bye in the first round but met Bloomfield’s Ed Millan in the quarters. Ferinde pinned him in 3:10 to move on.
After making quick work of his semifinal opponent (Ferinde defeated Chris Zaccaria (West Essex) by fall in 0:35), the junior handled Seton Hall’s Aidan Monteverdi by way of a 14-4 major decision to become a county champ.
