JUST THE STATS: Lospinoso pulled off one of the most notable upsets of the weekend when he defeated previously unbeaten Corey Stasenko of South Plainfield, 5-3, in overtime in the 145-pound final of the Region 3 tournament at Union High on Saturday.

Lospinoso (33-5) was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the event and immediately became someone to keep an eye on as the state tournament begins at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic Citystarting Friday and running through Sunday.

COACH’S COMMENT: “I’ve always felt that Nick could compete with the top-shelf wrestlers. He fell a bit short earlier but has started to put it together. Nick has worked very hard and definitely matured a lot from last year.” — Brearley second-year head coach Scot Weaver.

ON WINNING REGIONS: “It’s a great accomplishment, but I know I have to keep working hard at it. I’m ready to go (at states).”

BIGGEST DIFFERENCE FROM LAST YEAR: “Honestly, it’s my mind. Just getting my head in it 100 percent. And I’ve been practicing with John and Joey Balboni, who both have great motors. And the coaches have really helped a lot too.”
