Glen Ridge’s Faugno, 160-pound ECT champ, is ‘Outstanding Wrestler’

by Nelson Depasquale

More history has been made on the mats for the Glen Ridge wrestling program. 160-pound senior John Faugno made quick work of his opponents as he won four straight matches – not one of them made it to the third period – en route to his first ever Essex County Tournament Championship.

Faugno also won the tournament’s “Outstanding Wrestler” award, as voted on by the coaches of all the Essex County teams.

In the first round of the tournament, Faugno, the number one seed in his bracket, defeated Seton Hall Prep’s Donovan Monteverdi, by fall, in just 58 seconds.

It took Faugno 1:58 to pin Caldwell’s Ryan Schaffer in the quarterfinal round. He met fourth-seeded Chris Barone of Caldwell in the semifinals. After a takedown and three back points in the first period, Faugno scored an escape in the second before ending the match with a takedown followed by a pin. Faugno won, by fall, in 3:33.

Faugno met a familiar opponent in the finals when he took on Jordan Greene of Belleville. From the first period whistle, Faugno seemed to be focused and in control of the overall tempo of the match. He went on to win by tech fall, 17-1 at 3:57.

This was Faugno’s first Essex County Tournament Championship after flirting with the elusive title in his the first three years of his career at Glen Ridge High School. This also comes about a week after Faugno made history as the fourth Glen Ridge grappler to win 100 matches in his career. –
