PARAMUS – Justin Cochran is a small 145-pounder for Paramus. But he wrestles big.

Cochran bumped up to 152 Wednesday night and came away with one of the key victories as the Spartans shocked Hackensack, 50-9, to take control in the drive for the Big North Freedom Division title.

Junior Joe Trovato also picked one of the most anticipated matches of the season to become the fastest wrestler in Paramus history to win 100 bouts.

“To do it as a junior was a huge thing for me,” Trovato said. “And to do it at home in a big match against a rival like Hackensack is amazing.”

This rivalry had some extra buzz Wednesday night as the two top public school teams in North Jersey faced off with Hackensack needing a win to sew up the division title outright. Paramus is ranked fifth in The Record wrestling Top 25 and Hackensack is No. 6. But it was Paramus that got on a roll that the Comets just couldn’t stop.
