EVENT: WILDWOOD DUALS

LOCATION: WILDWOOD CONVENTION CENTER

TIME: FEBRUARY 12, 13, 14

In February, Apex Wrestling enrolled competition team in one of the nation’s top dual tournaments, The Wildwood Duals. The event was held over three days at the Wildwood Convention Center. Apex put together a last minute team missing some of the club’s top athletes who had already committed to other all-star teams. Most of the teams at the competition were composed of athletes selected from an entire state or even multiple states. The Elementary Division (grades 3-6) was composed of 18 teams and the Middle School Division (grade 7-8) was composed of 16 teams. The Elementary Division was divided into 2 pools of 9 teams. Every team in each pool competes against each other and 2 medal round matches are added. The Apex elementary team went 6-2 in pool competition. The only losses were to Pennsylvania Blue and Pennsylvania White who were the top two teams in the tournament. Apex defeated The Braves (South Jersey team), Virginia Powerhouse, New Jersey Smoke, Council Rock Pennsylvania, Northeast Elite from Connecticuit, and the SJWA Hammers.

The high finish in pool play allowed the team to compete in the third place bracket. In the first match, Apex defeated Pennsylvania Extreme. The final match was a repeat dual with Northeast Elite from Connecticut, but this time Apex was without two wrestlers due to injuries. The other team also didn’t allow Shane Griffith to fill in for the Apex team as they lost a close 3 point match. Apex Wrestling had an outstanding performance finishing 7-3, especially considering nearly one-third of the team was wrestling up a weight class. Next year, Apex will stack the odds in our favor. Sign-ups for the Apex Wildwood 2011 team begin ASAP. The Middle School Division was split into 2 pools of 8 teams. The Apex Team wrestled the three best teams right off the bat before winning 4 duals in a row. Apex Middle School team also lost to Pennsylvania White, Pennsylvania Blue, and SJWA Fire. They then defeated Team Kolat from Maryland, Tyrants from Delaware, KT Kidz from Connecticut, and PA Young Guns.
